This page presents an official legal definition of “person” from a government source. Additional definitions will be added as jurisdictions publish them.

A human being. This does not include a non-human entity that is treated as a person for limited legal purposes, unless otherwise specified. This term is synonymous with “individual” when it is used to describe a human being. This definition is different than the definition Congress has provided for determining the meaning of federal statutes, according to which “person” includes “corporations, companies, associations, firms, partnerships, societies, and joint stock companies, as well as individuals,” unless the context indicates otherwise. See 1 U.S.C. 1.
